Our Story

Our Humble Beginnings in Alaska

During the long, cold Alaskan winters, Grandpa brought warmth to his community through gourmet coffee, exquisite pastries, and heartfelt hospitality. Neighbors braved snowstorms and sub-zero temperatures to enjoy freshly brewed imported coffee beans from Colombia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, and beyond — each chosen for its rich flavor and quality. Alongside every steaming mug, guests were treated to Grandpa’s latest homemade pastry creation. What began as a gathering place filled with comfort and conversation soon inspired Grandpa to open his very own coffee and pastry shop in Anchorage, Alaska in 1989 — the beginning of the Bear Paw Coffee Company.

Growing Beyond a Coffee Shop

With only word-of-mouth as advertising, the business quickly flourished. Grandpa expanded the menu to include made-from-scratch Belgian waffles served with pure maple syrup, perfectly grilled Panini sandwiches on daily fresh-baked Italian bread, and a growing collection of creative breakfast and lunch dishes. Within just a few years, the simple yet exceptional offerings evolved into dozens of unique menu items that delighted Alaskans through icy winters and midnight sun summers alike.

A Legacy Continues in St. George

Although Grandpa loved Alaska, he eventually sought warmer skies and chose St. George, Utah as the next chapter. In 1995, he opened the second Bear Paw Coffee Company in the historic St. George Co-op Mercantile Building, where it continues to serve guests today. Now known as The Bear Paw Café, the restaurant proudly preserves Grandpa’s original recipes and traditions. Today, under the leadership of Jackson, the third generation manager, the Bear Paw remains a beloved and iconic destination — where every meal is crafted with care, friendships are formed, and hearts are warmed.
